Having a look at marriage cultures

The wedding ceremony is surprisingly rich with a variety of fun and interesting things that can keep you busy for hours. It never really occurs to the majority of people that a topic like this could be so rife with things amusing, interesting and, inspirational.

Many of todays wedding ceremonies are nothing like would be seen a couple of decades ago. The basic wedding stereotype is certainly still alive, but there are folks that truly break the mold when it comes to their wedding experience. Couples now experience creative expression that wouldn’t have been dreamed of a few years ago. To illustrate, While perusing the internet the other day, I ran across an article about a couple who were married at 1 Mile above sea level – in a hot air balloon.

The values of people have changed to the extent that the wedding itself has morphed into something much different than in the past. The well known recitation of the wedding ceremony was known to the extent that much of the wedding vows were already known by the attendees. In the present day, marriages are often referred to as “civil unions” because they are accomplished outside of the traditional Church environment. The use of the traditional scripts at the wedding ceremony has given way to more personalized wedding vows in which the bride and groom create their own vows. Basically, the wedding vows declared are completely custom made by the bride and groom, and may or may not be in the spirit of traditional weddings. In fact, one may wonder if there is really a life time commitment being forged at all. One recent example is of a wedding vow between wife and Gov Mark Sanford that illustrates the point: “technically, he never promised wife Jenny that he’d be faithful, in fact, he cut fidelity out of their wedding vows.”

It makes you wonder if there are really woman that are happy with a union like that.

Then there are the differing cultures in which marriages are initiated. There are in some cases very interesting aspects to the weddings of other cultures, and in other cases there are things that might seem very odd.

Additionally, there are some customs that we just take for granted, the historical background of which most certainly surprise you. One interesting throwback is the bridal shower, where it is thought to have derived in the case of a young bride-to-be who had no dowery. Her friends would “Shower” her with gifts to make up for where she was lacking.

But these few examples don’t tell all. Even wedding flower arrangements are affected by custom. There are a wide variety of wedding lore, customs amd oddities, and thats what this blog is all about.
